The following information are guidelines. The information is to help you on your journey along the path of Shorin Ryu karate.
7th Kyu (Yellow) – minimum 3 months
6th Kyu (Orange) – minimum 3 months
5th Kyu (Green) – minimum 3 months
4th Kyu (Blue) – minimum 4 months, average 6 months
3rd Kyu (Brown) – minimum 4 months, average 6 months
2nd Kyu (Brown) – minimum 4 months, average 6 months
1st Kyu (Brown) – minimum 4 months, average 6 months
Testing for 1st Dan and above will be done at the Sedalia Dojo or Camdenton Dojo
1st Dan (Black) – minimum 6 months, average 1 year
2nd Dan – minimum 1 year, average 2 years
3rd Dan - minimum 1.5 - 2 years, average 2.5 years
4th - 10th - at the discretion of Sensei Hobbs and Sensei Witt
Time frames listed above are for a normal month’s worth of classes.
Example for your first test:
As you reach higher ranks, testing opportunities will be less often. This is due to the amount of information you must learn while you are sharpening your previous skills.
For example, from 2nd to 3rd Dan, it may take a minimum of 2 years’ worth of classes to be eligible for a test. That equals around 192 classes!
Testing opportunities are at the discretion of Sensei Dan up to 1st Kyu.
Testing opportunities are at the discretion of Sensei Dan and Sensei Witt for 1st Dan and higher.

- For children 6 to 12 years old: Stripe tests are $10 and will be done at the Sensei’s discretion.
- Children reach a full rank once the 2nd stripe is earned.
